Welcome to Wellness Wednesday!!!

Disclaimer: this blog post is not meant to take the place of medical advice. If you or any other person has a medical concern or question, please consult with your health care provider and/or seek medical treatment immediately. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking medical advice because of something that you have read on this blog, website or linked materials.

This Wellness Wednesday, I want to focus on your wellness. Staying well and healthy is important for everyone, but it is especially important for pregnant women. Growing a human takes work, but with conversations with your provider, seeking out information and learning what works for your life, will help keep you and baby healthy, safe and happy.

Your baby is depending on you to do the Amazing job you are doing to keep him/her safe and well.

When you are pregnant-- receiving a ton of advice - seems to go hand in hand with the pregnancy announcement. I encourage you to ask questions. Talk to your provider about any and every concern. Make sure you understand your provider recommendations to ensure you have what you need to have a happy, healthy, and safe pregnancy.

I want to provide a few Nurse Tips to help you on your pregnancy journey:

🤰🏽💊 Overcounter Medication?

As a nurse, I would advise you to be very careful with medication over the counter. Even though a medication does not need a prescription , does not mean it is safe. When you are pregnant, you must be extra cautious, because certain medications can cause harm to the baby. Speak with your healthcare provider about approved medication in pregnancy, including over the counter medications!

💊🤰🏽

What about supplements and vitamins ?? Yes, it is important to have the nutrients you need to grow a healthy baby. A pregnant woman typically needs to take a prenatal vitamin with 600 micrograms of folic acid in it every day. Most prenatal vitamins contain this amount. Before you add extra- because extra does not always = healthier- speak with your healthcare provider. Some supplements may have too much or too little of the nutrients you need. And some may not be safe to take during pregnancy.

☕️☕️What about the herbs and herbal tea??

While herbs and herbal teas are natural, one would assume they are safe and healthy. While its true some are safe. The reality is there is not 100% assurance that herbs and herbal teas are safe in pregnancy. Some herbs are even used to promote labor. As a nurse, I would advise you make a list of herbs and herbal teas you want to incorporate in your diet and speak with your health care provider or a dietician that works with pregnancy women.

The most important thing for your pregnancy journey in the pursuit of healthy baby / healthy mom is to treat yourself well. Different suggestions and recommendations are not meant to restrict you from living your best pregnant life, but instead- suggested so you can fully enjoy the moment of pregnancy and what it will bring into your life.

So, from one nurse to all the pregnant mama's - I want you and your baby to Happy, Healthy and Well! Speak with your healthcare providers, bring all your questions that you have on how to keep you and your baby. Finally, never forget YOU ARE AMAZING and DOING A GOOD JOB!
